Listening to the crew discuss and abuse him, Dana repeatedly shifts from the inhospitable present to comforting memories of the past. Suddenly he decides to challenge his chief enemy. But time (as memory) and space (within the mind and ship), concentrated into one moment's hatred, become literally and metaphorically pointless because all Dana's efforts to hold time and space suspended in a long brooding stretch of anger lead to nothing. His challenge fails and the crew members disperse to their chores — the ship sails on.

In Lunar Caustic, the protagonist "gliding over the cobbles lightly as a ship leaving harbour" searches frantically for "any harbour at all" until he finds that he is "outward bound" for hell. Consequently, the novella charts a further withdrawal from reality after the temporary respite and balance established at the end of Ultramarine. Lowry was proud of Lunar Caustic, referring to it in 1952 as a "masterwork" (Selected Letter, 292). 11 Lowry had planned to lengthen and alter the book considerably.

Links with the "Voyage" are obvious and numerous, from the ubiquitous "Frere Jacques" melody to the haunting presence of Peter Cordwainer. The Cordwainer material is the most important link with the "Voyage" for it includes the identical psychic situation that Sigbj^rn experiences in the "Ordeal," and as previously noted (p. 14 above), Lowry was determined to introduce the suicide-guilt configuration from the "Ordeal" into Lunar Caustic.
