The form that these acts take we can understand only by understanding first the emotional and intellectual mainsprings of that society. (Benedict, 1959, p. 46) Benedict’s look at culture as a configuration links well with the view of culture as semiosphere (see below). As such, culture is a Gestalt phenomenon28 where it is “…more than the sum of” its component traits (Benedict, 1959, p. 47). Yet, as the quote above shows, culture is also conceptualized to be in-between persons and societies. The talk about culture is as if it were a person, yet it is a collective entity (“each people”) that simultaneously is shared by persons and “society”.

In the 1870s, the story was that of “races”—“ours” and “theirs”. The notion of culture was a German import,9 yet fitted into the English context. The notion of being a member of the society would be central for the latter (Tylor, 1871). Tylor used the notion of culture as a “hesitant alternative”10 to civilization. 11 Emphasis on the relevance of evolutionary thought—in the form of assuming the development of culture—was also an English priority. The emphasis on “membership in society” as a defining condition moves the notion of culture beyond the German Kultur and makes preparations for turning the use of the term from singular to plural.
